Guardianship & Alternatives
March 26 @ 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Join us Saturday, March 26th at Whites Chapel United Methodist Church in Southlake for a discussion about guardianship, supported decision making and other alternatives. Leading this discussion will be Jeff Miller, JD, Policy Specialist with Disability Rights Texas (DRTx). Jeff has held various positions at DRTx starting in 2006, including work in the areas of health care access, community integration, and special education. He is currently a Policy Specialist focusing on various issues including alternatives to guardianship, voting rights and special education.
During the session we will review the guardianship process and discuss alternatives to guardianships, such as supported-decision-making agreements and supports and services available in Texas that can be utilized to avoid the necessity of guardianship. We will also explore the benefits of self-determination and person centered planning. Finally, we will review the supported decision-making process and supported-decision-making agreements that can be used to support the independence, self-determination and self-reliance of individuals with disabilities.
